Philippa Drummond Artist

My work explores the relationship between microcosm and macrocosm through the mediums of photography, printmaking and artists’ books. I’m interested in the small-scale elements of the natural world seen within the wider context of large-scale geographical or topographical features. Plant specimens, grasses, rock-markings, land-masses, coastlines and archipelagoes all hold equal fascination for me.
At times the images in my work may appear like miniature worlds being viewed under a microscope or mimic the vastness of large geographical features captured through aerial photography. This ambiguity aims to challenge notions of scale and viewpoint inviting the viewer to participate in the process of looking and decoding. The languages of cartography, photography, bookbinding and textiles are continually referenced. Travels in Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Europe and at home in Scotland have inspired my work.

“There are quieter moments from talented voices such as Annie Woodford and Philippa Drummond, who have created, in their respective works Merisis and Archipelago, sensitive, delicate imagery derived form natural forms”
